Types of Solar PV Systems

In this section, you can learn more about the types of solar power systems that can serve various applications. Not all PV systems are similar in terms of system components, size, and type of application. For example, solar water pumping for rural applications, where there is no access to an electricity grid, utilizes components that are slightly different from rooftop solar systems for commercial applications, where a power grid already exists.

On-grid Solar Power Plants

This type of solar power plant is used to run parallel to the electrical grid to save on utility bills. Surplus solar electricity can be transferred to the external grid as needed.

Main equipment for different types of solar PV systems

In order for each of the PV system types to function and deliver usable energy to consumers, a number of components are needed to allow energy to be generated, conditioned, stored, and transferred to end users. So what are these components, according to the classification?

The main and only component in the PV system that converts solar radiation into electricity is solar module. It is key power-generating equipment in any solar power system.

Solar PV system generates DC electricity, which is not the common form to be used for commercial appliances and utility grids, which usually uses AC electricity. So in order to be able to connect the PV power plant to the grid we need to convert the DC to AC, and that is done using special units also known as solar inverters.

Not all energy generates by the PV system is used right away, especially at off-grid systems. So in order to maximize the effective usage of solar modules, we need additional devices to store the energy for later uses, and that is easily done using power banks or energy storage systems.
