Types of solar inverters

Inverters play an important role in solar power plants. Solar panels generate direct current (DC), while the electrical grid operates on alternating voltage (AC). Inverters convert the direct current generated by the solar panels into alternating current that can be fed into the electrical grid.

Inverters are responsible for optimizing the energy flow at the PV system and ensuring the most efficient use of energy generated by solar panels. They control the voltage and frequency of the electrical current delivered at the output port and ensure the uninterrupted operation of the system under various conditions such as weather changes, voltage fluctuations, equipment failure, etc.

Inverters also play an important role in the storage of energy production data of solar power plants. Most inverters have built-in monitoring functions that allow owners to monitor energy production, track problems and monitor system efficiency. This helps to ensure maximum energy output and reduce the costs of repair and maintenance of solar power plants.

Each inverter has its own passport data, based on which you should choose an inverter. Such data include power (watts), input voltage (volts), output voltage (volts), power factor, efficiency factor (%), inverter type (on-grid, stand-alone, hybrid), technical characteristics, protection characteristics, overall dimensions and weight, requirements for the operating environment (temperature, humidity, altitude above sea level), warranty terms and conditions, and the method of connection to solar panels and the power grid.

The selection of the inverter is based on the wishes of the customer. Therefore, it is necessary to understand what types exist in order to make the best selection of the inverter based on them. Let’s consider what types of inverters exist in Ukraine.

The main types of solar inverters

In general, there are the following types of inverters:

1. On-grid is the most common type of inverters in Ukraine. The principle of operation is based on the transfer of energy from the sun to the grid, for its subsequent sale to the state or a commercial buyer. In our opinion, this is the most profitable choice of inverter for earning passive income. The diagram for this type of inverter looks like this: solar panel —> inverter —> meter of energy transferred to the grid.

2. Off-grid – this type of inverters that are not connected to the electrical grid. The principle of operation is based on the transfer of energy directly to the consumer with the possibility of storing it. In our opinion, these are the best type of inverters for those who need a standalone uninterruptible power supply. Stand-alone inverters can use batteries to store energy, allowing it to be used at night or during periods when energy production from solar panels is low. The circuit diagram for this type of inverter looks like this: solar panel —> battery charge controller —> battery — > inverter.

3. Hybrid – this type of inverters includes the ability to both store and sell energy. Hybrid inverters can manage the flow of energy from different sources and provide uninterrupted power. The inverter acts as a central node (brain). This type is the best choice of inverters for those who use multiple energy sources, such as solar panels, wind turbines and renewable energy generators, and want to use them as efficiently as possible with the existing grid. One of the advantages of hybrid inverters is that they can manage the flow of energy from different sources and provide uninterrupted power. For example, if the energy production from the solar panels decreases during cloudy weather, the hybrid inverter can automatically switch on the renewable energy generator to provide stable power.

So, the following conclusions can be drawn: to choose the optimal type of inverter, it is necessary to take into account the individual needs and conditions of each user. An on-grid inverter is the most profitable choice for earning passive income, while a standalone inverter is the best choice for those who need uninterrupted power. Hybrid inverters represent the greatest efficiency for those who use multiple energy sources and want to use them as efficiently as possible.

Avenston has accumulated a lot of experience with solar inverters of different types and from different manufacturers. A list of the main brands we have dealt with can be seen at this link. We have a deep understanding of all the pros and cons of using each model available on the Ukrainian market. If you are planning to build your own solar power plant, Avenston will help you do it in the most optimal way. All the equipment we use in our projects has high efficiency and an extended warranty, which provides our customers with increased electricity generation throughout the life of the constructed solar power plant.
